XLR was used by later Microsoft Works spreadsheet versions and stores workbook data in a compound-file structure related to older worksheet formats. Anyfile uses SheetJS to recover supported tables.

Is XLR an Excel file?

It is a Microsoft Works spreadsheet format. Excel could open some versions, but its internal organization and feature set are distinct.
